Healthy Choices Program
"We DO have choices about so many things in life; the problem is often in recognizing this."

When: Every Tuesday at 6:00pm

Where: Flood Brook Union School

"People have long been asking us for a program oriented toward healthier living," says Dr. Delores Barbeau, "and we have an exciting team of people who are willing to work towards empowering others to take charge of their lives."

The emphasis of the weekly meetings will be on both healthy activity and good food choices, while looking at the factors that influence the decisions we make. "Family pressure, time constraints, medical conditions, job and income difficulties, the daily stress of living - all of these form part of the backdrop against which we make choices," Dr. Barbeau reminds us.

"We will have the full use of exercise equipment in Flood Brook School, as well as the expertise of Joan Morey, our group leader and motivator. We will be working with experts offering a step- aerobic and walking program, yoga classes, nutrition. We will coordinate with local health providers when necessary because of health issues, and because we know that there may be extrinsic reasons why participants feel unable to make healthy choices, staff from our office will be available to consult on socioeconomic issues."
This program is possible through a grant from the Holt Fund, a group well-known in our area for the service they offer local projects.

Examinations are recommended for women age 40 and above.

The screenings will be held in each community in a central location. Scheduling will include weekdays, evenings and some weekends in order for this to be available to all women.

Please call Neighborhood Connections at 824 4343 for more information or to schedule an appointment. There will be no cost for this service.

This opportunity is made possible by a grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Vermont Reading Partners
A Volunteer Literacy Program

Adult Basic and ESOL Programs-
Our Adult Basic Program is open to any adult, sixteen years or older living in southwestern Vermont. We provide trained tutors to work with adult students one-on-one to improve basic literacy skills that may include reading, writing, math, GED test preparation, basic computer, and work-related skills.

Our Adult ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Program augments our Adult Basic Program by adding listening and speaking skills specifically to adults wishing to improve their conversational English-speaking skills as well as their reading and writing skills.

School Programs- Available at Flood Brook Union School
We provide trained tutors to work with primary-grade students in an after-school tutoring program that is offered in ten local elementary schools. In cooperation with the school's administration and teaching staff, we tutor students who are struggling with reading skills but do not qualify for additional help from state and federal programs. The personal attention these children receive helps them to become successful in school.

Family Program
Our Family Program encourages reading at home between children and parents. Families attend tutoring sessions together and cover skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
